I like to watch them climb the hill--
by Z. S. Stalls
3 November 2025
I like to watch them climb the hill--
the Christmas lights that dot I-5
and twinkle through the cedars, still
bright and warm in foggy chill.
Because this wire's always live,
I like to watch them climb the hill.
The eternal serpent drinks its fill
of workers headed for their hive
and twinkles through the cedars, still
gorging, growing, but never ill.
Myself, I actually hate to drive;
I like to watch them climb the hill.
These hours at my windowsill
are spent until my dreams, alive
and twinkling through the cedars, still
bear witness to their constant will.
Until the dawn when I revive,
I like to watch them climb the hill
and twinkle through the cedars still.
After Emily Dickinson's "I like to see it lap the Miles - (383)"
