Spirit of America
by Z. S. Stalls
3 November 2025

surely you were among the flock
who flew on His command.
did you drop the biggest blunder?
if so, it's not your error.

you are not the sea change;
you are just the wave,
broken into untold specks
of vapor on the air,

sweat upon the brow
of a nobody with a safety blade
cutting powder into packages
slipped in with our mail.

that's the thing about the ocean--
it takes only drops
to seep inside foundations
and crumble even rock.

we live in a house of gold,
and gold is a soft metal.
