transfiguration
by Z. S. Stalls
4 November 2025
a sign in the night,
abrasive blue-white
against a Van Gogh back-
drop of blue-black:
"LOW COST" AUTO INSURANCE
WE INSURE ALL DRIVERS
cacophonic cries
of insect lies,
truths, and in-betweens
bed with machines'
more calculated drones:
loud wires for telephones,
America online,
and, of course, our sign.
smell the plastic
meet sick-
ly and pair
with sweet heavy air
like warm whiskey
and Pepsi-
Cola. taste the blood
of lawnmower cud:
St. Augustine,
cut clean
and sending
fire ants defending
leveled king-
doms of sand. fevering
and shoulders
ablaze, the body smolders,
as does the soul and the mind:
unholy trinity, heat in kind
and burning bright--
hark! a nova takes flight.
